July 13, 2019 – Services and Lunch/Learn will be held at Temple Sinai
Parashat Chukkat – Welcoming our Guest Teachers Emily Winer Goldberg and Jonah Winer
Emily Goldberg Winer is finishing her first year at Yeshivat Maharat and is the incoming Jewish chaplain at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, a women’s maximum security state prison. She is a Wexner Graduate Fellow, a participant in the 92nd Street Y’s Jewish Innovation Fellowship, and recently completed the Shalom Hartman Institute’s Rabbinic Student Seminar. She enjoys volunteering at soup kitchens, people and dog watching, and adding puns into conversations. She will introduce this morning’s parasha and lead a “group” for students in grades 2 and above during Musaf.
A Toronto, Canada native, Jonah Winer felt inspired to pursue the rabbinate at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah during his time as an undergraduate at McGill University. His study of religion and his volunteer leadership roles at downtown Montreal’s student-led Ghetto Shul, showed him the need for inclusive Orthodox communities, and for religious leaders capable of building them. During lunch, he will lead a shiur called “The First Havdalah” – a deep dive on the midrashic origins of Havdalah, why we do it, and what it is supposed to be about
